Leadership Training Devotional - Leadership

Growing As A Servant Leader: Week 1
The best example of leadership we can try to pattern ourselves after is Jesus. This week we will do a topical study which will focus on how Jesus led. Read the passages for each day and write what you learn about leadership. Remember we are not as concerned with WHAT Jesus was saying or teaching as with HOW He was leading.

Day 1: Matthew 3:13-17 & 4:1-11

Day 2: Matthew 4:18-25 & Mark 3:13-15

Day 3: Matthew 10:1-5; 11:1-6 & John 6:6

Day 4: Matthew 16:13-15; 16:23 & 23:1-12

Day 5: Mark 10:35-45; John 10:1-16 & 19:9-11

Day 6: Matthew 26:39-42; Luke 9:51 & John 21:15-19

Day 7: Look over your weeks study and write down what you see are the key ingredients to HOW Jesus led. What do you need to work on? Take time to pray about this area with your prayer partner.

Growing As A Servant Leader: Week 2
This week we will do an inductive study on I Timothy. This is a letter the Apostle Paul writes to young Timothy to encourage him in his labor for the Lord. It involves commands specifically to Timothy and other commands which Timothy is to pass on to the church.

Day 1: Read through the entire book quickly. Don't look for anything in particular but just get a "flavor" for the material.

Days 2-3: Go through the book and make two lists of all the commands. Make one list of those commands given to Timothy as a man of God. Make a second list of commands given to the church.

Commands To Timothy Commands to the Church

Days 4-7: Analyze and evaluate the lists you have made. Here are a few suggestions to help you organize your thoughts:

1. Break up the commands into positive and negative ones.

2. Analyze Timothy's character. Defend your findings from the list of commands. (This is especially helpful if you identify with Timothy)

3. Rewrite the commands as a few general categories which would be relevant to our church today.

4. Rewrite the commands in a way which you think Paul would have written them to you.

5. Analyze the commands that apply particularly to you. Develop a plan to carry out these commands and share this with your prayer partner.

Growing As A Servant Leader: Week 4

The following study will enable leaders to sort out the Biblical priorities of their various responsibilities.

PRIORITY ONE: LOVE GOD

Day 1: Matthew 6:33; 22:37-40; John 8:12-18 & 15:7-8
Summarize what these verses have to say about your pursuit of God.

Day 2: Luke 5:16; 6:12; 9:18,28 & 18:1-8
Summarize what these verses have to say about your pursuit of God.

PRIORITY TWO: LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR

Day 3: Nearest Neighbor (Spouse)
Ephesians 5:21-33; Colossians 3:18-19 & I Peter 5:1-7
What commands are you given here? Evaluate your priorities accordingly.

Day 4: Next Nearest Neighbor (Children)
Mark 10:42-45; Galatians 5:17; Ephesians 6:4; Colossians 3:21
What commands are you given here? Evaluate your efforts accordingly.

Day 5: Next Nearest Neighbor (Other Leaders)
Matthew 26:36-37; Mark 3:14 & Acts 20:28-31
What commands are you given here? Evaluate your efforts accordingly.
You might also look back to your studies in I Timothy.

Day 6: The Flock (Other Believers)
Matthew 28:18-20; John 21:15-17; Acts 15:6 & I Peter 5:1-5
What commands are you given here? Evaluate your efforts accordingly.

Day 7: The Lost (Everyone Else)
Matthew 9:35-38; Mark 16:15-16 & Romans 10:1-4
What commands are you given here? Evaluate your efforts accordingly.

Now evaluate which priorities are out of order (the above is the appropriate order for Christian servant/leaders). Make a plan for getting them back in order.

Growing As A Servant Leader: Week 5
This week we will do a brief study of several of the great leaders in the Bible. We will look at one section of scripture that most clearly shows their style of leadership. Read each portion and make a list of HOW each man led. In some of the larger sections we allow 2 days for the study.

Day 1: Moses Numbers 11:1-35

Day 2: Joshua Joshua 1:1-18

Day 3: Nehemiah Nehemiah 1:1-11

Day 4: David [Psalm 51]

Days 5-6: Paul [Acts 27:1-44]

Day 7: Summarize by making a list of the key characteristics that made these men good leaders. How can you develop these characteristics in your life?

Growing As A Servant Leader: Week 6
This week we will do the same as last week except we will study the book of II Timothy and Titus. You can go through the procedures given in week 2 with each book separately, or you can do both together. If you are going to do each book separately, be sure to limit yourself to 3 days for each book so that you will have time for both. Use day 7 for an overall evaluation of what you learned.

Day 1: Read through the entire book(s) quickly. Don't look for anything in particular but just get a "flavor" for the material.

Days 2-3: Go through the book(s) and make two lists of all the commands. Make one list of those commands given to Timothy as a man of God. Make a second list of commands given to the church.

Commands To Timothy & Titus Commands to the Church

Days 4-7: Analyze and evaluate the lists you have made. Here are a few suggestions to help you organize your thoughts:

1. Break up the commands into positive and negative ones.

2. Analyze Timothy or Titus' character. Defend your findings from the list of commands. (This is especially helpful if you identify with Timothy or Titus)

3. Rewrite the commands as a few general categories which would be relevant to our church today.

4. Rewrite the commands in a way which you think Paul would have written them to you.
